Welcome to Hancock County Solid Waste Management

As Findlay and Hancock County continues to grow and develop, it’s important that we as citizens be responsible about what is sent to our landfill.  It’s important to our environment and future generations that what we throw away is truly trash and that recyclable materials are diverted from the waste stream. It’s important to our community because when we throw it away, it doesn’t really go away.  It is our goal to provide environmental programs and opportunities that positively impact the Hancock County community, and to enhance the attitudes and actions of our citizens regarding the proper disposal of waste.

The Hancock County Recycling and Litter Prevention Program was established in 1981 as a joint effort between the City of Findlay and the Board of Hancock County Commissioners, The litter prevention and recycling program was formed as a comprehensive litter control program to address environmental needs and concerns facing our community. Since 1981, the Findlay-Hancock County community has been an active member of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving waste handling practices in America.   Since its establishment, the program has had a tremendous impact upon our community in litter control and recycling efforts. Over 300 local businesses, industries, churches, schools, civic groups, organizations, and other various related institutions have given generous support to the program.

Throughout the years there have been some changes but the Hancock County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD)  still wants to provide the residents with the most up to date solid waste, recycling and litter awareness information available.  Currently, the Environmental Services Office works under the Board of Hancock County Commissioners and with the Hancock County Solid Waste Management District Policy Board to provide recycling opportunities, educational programs and litter collection events. Recycling collection events are held throughout the year such as Tire Amnesty Days, Appliance Recycling Days, Used Oil collections, Electronics Day and Hazardous Waste Collection Days.

The Hancock County Solid Waste Management District also sponsors other environmental activities throughout the year that residents are encouraged to participate in such as Spring Clean Up, the Adopt-A-Roadway Program and contests.  Keep America Beautiful Inc. by honoring Hancock County with the President’s Circle Award has recognized our efforts.

Our mission is to increase community involvement, improve recycling rates, reduce space used at our local sanitary landfill, while keeping roadways and waterways clean and litter free.  Together we can keep Findlay and Hancock County a beautiful place to live and work within.
